June 6, 2009, Auburn, Neb: Dan Emshoff, 40, whips up the margarita mix using a custom cooler mounted atop a garbage disposal during the 2nd annual Blues, Bikes and B-B-Q held in back of his restaurant. Emshoff became owner of the Hickory Road B-B-Q on a whim.
While looking for a house to buy in Auburn, his wife noticed the bar/restaurant for sale and told him he should buy it. He called the realtor and 15 minutes later the deal was done, minus the necessary paperwork.
A native Nebraskan, Emshoff says his business is better now than last year. "I'm up about 15 percent," he said. As for the economy, however, he says the news is depressing. As a result, about two months ago he stopped watching news on TV. "I now get my local news off the radio," he said. (Photo by Bruce Thorson)
